First Aid

Red Cross kindly offers heavily discounted first aid classes to our THEN network. The certificates earned are valid for two years, as per industry standard. Subsequently, THEN offers these classes every two years. Members are notified when the classes are scheduled and bookings are open.

If you would like to learn some first aid while waiting for the classes to be hosted, you can download the Red Cross First Aid app at this link.

When registering for First Aid, please read the following information carefully as there are quite a few details to understand.

Certified Essential First Aid course (2 x NCEA credits offered)

for students aged 13+ with no previous first aid certification

(No exceptions are possible for under age 13, sorry. THEN aims to offer the course every two years. Student too young this time will be offered a place in the next round of classes.

Classes are scheduled over two days from 10:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

at Red Cross, Hamilton head office, 31 Harwood Street (no parking available on site)

Total in-class time is 8 hours, minus ½ hour each day for a lunch break (bring a pack lunch). Full attendance in both sessions is required for completion. In the event of extenuating circumstances (i.e. sickness) and a student misses the 2nd class, the student will be required to join another scheduled class at the same location to make up the missed class time. If a student is suddenly unwell and unable to attend the 1st class, a full refund will be given and the student can join in the next time THEN hosts first aid.

When funds are available, THEN offers an additional subsidy, limited to two students per family, which applies for two students in the same class or one student in each class. The subsidy, if applicable, is $30 per student, with a balance of $45 per student to be paid, immediately at the time of registration, to the THEN account in order to confirm your place in the class. Additional students in a family not qualifying for the subsidy, or if the subsidy is not available, will need to pay the full $75 fee.

The minimum class size is 10 students, and the maximum class size is 20 students. Preference on enrolment will be given to THEN students, although unfilled places will be made available to parents/caregivers who may wish to join the class at the heavily discounted rate of $75. Payment must be made at the same time that you complete the signup form.

We offer one place, at no charge, to a parent who is willing to attend the full course as a facilitator for any of our teenagers who would benefit from extra support in the class. The parent might be awarded a First Aid certificate at the end of the course, as this has happened in the past.

To complete your registration:

  1. Please make sure that you are a current member of THEN.
  2. Complete our registration form.
    • The exemption number is located at the top of your exemption letter from MOE.  It is an un-labelled number containing five digits with a dash and an additional number (i.e. 12345-1).
    • If you do not know your student’s national student number, you do not need to ask anyone for the number or register for one. All students are already assigned one.  This has been a matter of confusion for some parents in the past. The Ministry of Education is able to provide us with your students National Student Number (NSN), provided you give us the student’s exemption number.
    • These student details are required so that your student is awarded the credits with NZQA. If you student is (or becomes) enrolled in NCEA, they will also receive NCEA credit for the course.
    • Recognizing the Privacy Act, enrolling your child in the course means that you give us permission to request your student’s NSN number from the MOE.
  3. Make your course fee payment, as per below.

Recertify First Aid course (no NCEA credit given)

for students with previous first aid certification issued within the two years prior to the date of the class

class held one day from 10:00am – 2:30pm

at Red Cross, Hamilton head office, 31 Harwood Street (no parking available on site)

Total in-class time is 4 hours, minus ½ hour each day for a lunch break (bring a pack lunch and a pen). An additional 2 hours of pre-class online review is also required.

As per previous courses, THEN is sponsoring this class at $20 per student, with a balance of $45 per student to be paid to the THEN account in order to confirm your place in the class. Additional students in a family not qualifying for the subsidy will pay the full $65 fee. (Yes, the Red Cross fee and THEN subsidy are different for this class compared to the initial course). The minimum class size is 10 students, and we generally have extra space in this class, so enrollments are open to parents/grandparents who wish to re-certify for their professional development at the heavily discounted cost of $65/student. Parents/caregivers will not receive the $20 THEN subsidy, but the course cost is still a huge discount over the standard fees. Payments must be made immediately to THEN account when enrolment form is completed.

To complete your registration:

  1. Please make sure that you are a current member of THEN or pay for a non-subsidized place.
  2. Complete our registration form. Student numbers are not required for recertification as NCEA credit is not available. Please enter n/a in the number fields.
